[Circumstances of Incident]

This accident occurred when a dump truck carrying gravel to be used at a construction site was on the way to the construction site. The dump truck jumped over the median strip and run into a van in the opposite lane.

The driver was a worker at a subcontracting company of the general contractor, and was carrying gravel from a construction material company under the instructions of a supervisor of the general contractor.

As it was discovered during backfill work that not enough gravel had been brought to the site in the morning, the worker drove a 2-ton truck alone to the gravel pit, bought an additional one cubic meter of gravel and headed back to the construction site in the rain.

While traveling on a national highway around 3:15 in the afternoon, the dump truck jumped over the median strip and crashed into a van traveling in the opposite lane, and both vehicles were overturned.

The worker driving the dump truck was killed in the accident, as was one of the two workers of another company in the van. The other worker in the van was severely injured.

[Causes]

The following can be considered as the causes of this accident.

  1. After slipping on the rainy road and hitting the median strip, the dump truck jumped into the opposite lane through a break in the median strip.

  2. As only one day was allocated to the worker driving the dump truck to complete the work, he was driving the truck at a relatively high speed in an attempt to get back to the construction site quickly to complete the assigned work as it began raining.
