The underguard of a shovel loader fell on a worker's left hand during removal, causing an injury.

A worker crawled under a shovel loader to repair its transmission and was trying to remove the underguard. Because the rear section of the underguard was heavy, the worker placed a block beneath it. Expecting the front section to be light, he planned to support it with his hand, and used a ratchet wrench to remove the bolt. When the bolt was removed, the underguard fell on the worker's left hand, causing an injury.

Corrective Action
1. Check the weight of underguards in advance.
2. Always plan to use blocks or transmission jacks.
3. Be diligent about taking safety precautions when working with unstable objects.
