A hanging engine swung and crushed a worker's hand..

A hydraulic shovel engine was being offloaded from a truck by a crane. While a worker was climbing down from the truck bed after performing the slinging work, the crane operator hoisted the crane, causing the off-centered load to swing toward the worker and crush the hand he had placed on the corner of the engine frame. The impact bruised the pinky finger on his right hand, fracturing the acral bone.

Corrective Action
1. Be diligent about using signals when working with others.
2. Carry out load control operations before hoisting the load to determine the center of gravity.
