Percentage of Smokers Falls to the Lowest of 32.7 Percent
According to a survey by Japan Tobacco Inc., the percentage of smokers among the total population nationwide has reached a record low of 32.7 percent. The survey was conducted in May 2000 and involved 16,000 adults throughout the country of which some 11,000 responded (effective response rate of 70.3 percent).

The ratio for male smokers was 52.0 percent (-1.5% comparing to the previous year) and that for female smokers was 14.7 percent (+1.0%). Calculations based on that results indicate that the total number of smokers stands at 33,140,000 persons (+10,000) of which 25,440,000 were males (-560,000) and 7,700,000 females (+570,000).

Whereas the ratio of male smokers has been continuing to decline during past several years, the ratio for female smokers has leveled off. Smoker ratios by age group among males were highest in their 30s, and in their 20s among females. The average number of cigarettes smoked daily was 23.9 for males and 17.2 for females.
