A worker's finger was crushed during the removal of a hydraulic cylinder.
To remove the arm cylinder of a hydraulic shovel, a worker straddled the shovel's arm and used the handle of a small hammer to hit the pin while a wire suspended from a crane held the cylinder rod.
When the pin came out, the worker's finger went into the pinhole. When the cylinder bounced up, the edge of the cylinder crushed the worker's finger.

Corrective Action
1. When removing a pin, use a bar designed for removal work, and hit the hammer on the bar.
2. Carefully check the status of the hanger, and keep it balanced so it is not overstretched.
3. Do not perform work while straddling an arm. Instead, work from a stable position using a work platform or stepstool.
